Cats are wonderful companions and one of the easiest pets to take care of… except for their litter boxes. However, there are some basic rules you can follow to make litter boxes more enjoyable for both you and your cat.

Choosing the Right Cat Litter

Cats can be finicky about the type of litter in their boxes. I recently had the opportunity to check out a new cat litter—Fresh Step Febreze Freshness Gain Scented Clumping Clay Cat Litter—that will make most cats, and their owners, very happy. My cat and I both give it a rating of 5 out of 5.

Benefits of Fresh Step Febreze Freshness Clumping Clay Cat Litter

There are a number of reasons why I believe that this litter is well worth considering:

  • Studies have shown that cats tend to react more positively to clumping litter, and Fresh Step Febreze Freshness Gain Scented Clumping Clay Cat Litter created clumps that were notably tighter than the ones in our previous litter. They were much easier to scoop and also trapped odors coming from the litter box.
  • Fresh Step Febreze Freshness Gain Scented Clumping Clay Cat Litter also uses activated charcoal as an odor reducer and then tops it off with a paw-activated, pleasant smelling Febreze scent. I did not find the smell to be overwhelming and my cat did not seem to mind it either. But if your cat dislikes scented cat litter, this may not be the best option for them.
  • Cats with respiratory issues can have issues with normal litter due to its dustiness. However, Fresh Step Febreze Freshness Gain Scented Clumping Clay Cat Litter is 99.9% dust-free.

Changing Litters

Cats are creatures of habit, so if you do want to switch a new cat litter, consider doing so gradually. Take a couple of weeks and keep topping off the box with the new litter as you scoop out the old. When it’s time for a complete change of litter, your cat should readily accept a box full of new, high-quality litter like Fresh Step Febreze Freshness Gain Scented Clumping Clay Cat Litter.

Litter Box Troubleshooting

Many cats are also picky when it comes to their litter boxes:

  • The number of litter boxes should always exceed the number of cats in a house by one. For example, two cats should have three litter boxes. Fights can arise between cats because of an insufficient number of litter boxes and previous conflicts can cause cats to pee and poop outside of the litter box.
Most cats also prefer a large uncovered litter box because it is more comfortable and feels safer than a tight, enclosed space.
  • Dirty litter boxes are another common problem. A cat’s nose is very sensitive, so if the smell is too strong for you, it is most definitely too strong for your cat. Cats will avoid litter boxes that they deem too dirty, so scooping them out every day and replacing the litter at least monthly will make litter boxes more appealing for both you and your cat.
  • If you are ever in doubt over your cat’s litter box, think about whether it matches the qualities you would like from a bathroom—clean, comfortable, and readily accessible.

If you’re ready to try out a trouble-free litter that both you and your cat will love, I strongly recommend Fresh Step Febreze Freshness Gain Scented Clumping Clay Cat Litter.
